10/100/1000 Ethernet Solutions for ESD and Lightning up to 10A, 20A and 40A

Design Notes:

Protection Application:
The data signals used in an Ethernet port vary between 1.0V and 2.5V, with maximum data rates of 1000Mbps (or 1Gb). At this speed, the capacitance of the suppressor needs to be taken into account. The signal lines to be protected from ESD and lightning transients include Tx+/- and Rx+/-.
Solution Description:
Top: The SP4060 is an 8 channel TVS Diode Array capable of protecting all 8 channels of a 1000Base-T (1Gb) Ethernet port. It provides ESD protection and lightning immunity up to the GR-1089 intra-building requirements (100A, tp=2/10us) if a robust transformer is used. Lab testing could also prove the SP4060 to be effective suppressing inter-building (500A, tp=2/10us) lighting surges as well, but this would have to be verified via testing since it will be heavily dependant on the transformer.

Middle: The SP3050 is a 4 channel TVS Diode Array capable of protecting up to 4 channels. It provides ESD protection and lightning immunity up to the GR-1089, intra-building requirements (100A, tP=2/10us) if a robust transformer is used.

Bottom: The SP3050 is a 4 channel TVS Diode Array capable of protecting up to 4 channels from differential (metallic) lightning surges and ESD. If used on the secondary side of the transformer, the SPLV2.8-4 will provide ESD prote
Companion Solutions:
Other solutions within the LF portfolio exist in addition to these recommendations. If the transformer is not capable of withstanding GR-1089 (intra and inter-building) lightning surges, then more robust Ethernet solutions involving the SP03 or SEP Series should be considered. It should also be noted that the SPLV2.8-4 provides differential (metallic) protection only. If common mode (longitudinal) transients are a concern, the other solutions like the SP3050 or SP4060 can be used.
Regulatory Issues:
GR1089 (Intra- or Inter-building, Port Type 3b/5b) will be the most applicable standard for lightning immunity of Ethernet ports but ITU K.20, .21, YS/T950, YD/T993, and IEC 61000-4-5 may also apply depending on the geographical destination for the final application. The IEC 61000-4-2 will be the most appropriate standard for ESD protection, and this is also cited in GR-1089.
